Cancer screening (Colonoscopy)

1. Description

One includes in this word certain specialised examinations performed in asymptomatic patients to detect early neoplasia.

Two other tests are especially popular today.

  • The first is the virtual colonoscopy. This is a colon cancer screening test performed in computed tomography. A low dose of radiation is used to visualise not only the light in the area of the colon where the cancer develops but also all the intra-abdominal organs, and to detect on occasion certain concomitant or other diseases. Its advantage, when compared to standard colonoscopy, is the degree of comfort, which is much higher since we only have to introduce a very small cannula into the rectum. The colon is distended with CO², which is much better tolerated than air in a barium enema, and which is absorbed much more quickly. A similar preparation to that of the barium enema or the colonoscopy is still required. Its disadvantage, when compared to standard colonoscopy, is the inability to remove possible polyps immediately viewed during the study. Since fewer than 10% of colonoscopies contain significant lesions, this disadvantage is not considered sufficient to justify its non-use. Virtual colonoscopy requires special preparation. Our team of experts will inform you as to this when you make the appointment.
  • The other widespread test is lung cancer screening. CT is used again in this case, in low doses, to detect small intra-lung lesions, potentially neoplastic, and allow treatment before a too invasive stage is reached.
  • To this range of detection, is also added the Calcium Score. The objective is to evaluate coronary artery calcification. It is not a detection of neoplasia, but rather the risk of significant coronary artery disease in a patient. This test may be prescribed by your family physician or cardiologist. Quantifying the presence of calcium in your coronary arteries allows a better stratifying of risk and guides a possible treatment.
